The last three days were japanese holidays, called obon, or just bon. It's a special event in japan. This three days are to honor the spirits of one's ancestors. People visit the graves of their ancestors, clean this, place incense and pray. This custom has developed into a family reunion holiday and has been celebrated for more than 500 years.

Today is JiGoku-bon and we were in the kaigen-ji temple. Twice a year, there is a heaven and hell exhibition.

Kaigen-ji temple is a small temple. When we arrived, we put konnyaku, a present for datsui-baba, an old friendly woman, in a basket and light a stick of incense. We wish very healthy life to all our friends, family and ourselves. (You can see this woman, on the picture on the left side at the bottom - it's the smaller figure in the foreground.)

A legend says, everybody, who has sinned in their life and hurt another person, have to spend three years in hell. After this time, full of torments, they will forgive iniquity and their sin. At this step, enma changes his appearance. The paintings of the exhibition deals from this story.

333967.jpg My manager told me as well, on the first two days, the 13th and the 14th, the soul of the ancestors come back on earth and ride animals, which members of the family have created from vegetable, for example horses from cucumbers or cows from eggplants (on the picture left you can see two of this). On the 15th the ancestors leave again and the people hope, they do slowly and come back soon.

In additon, the obon-festival includes a dance, called bon-dori. Each place has their own dance.
